Project Update - December 2023

The Cove Sports project is progressing well, there has been lots of activity onsite the last few months.

Excavation for the Cove netball court foundation is complete, with a concrete pour scheduled in the coming weeks.

Earthworks continue widely across the site, preparing for the new carparks and extension of the lower oval. The project will continue to take shape early in the new year with the installation of structural steel, wall and roof framing.

Work will start to slow down onsite over the Christmas period and will resume early January.

Completion date for the project remains on schedule with the anticipated completion date Mid 2024.

Works will be undertaken between 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday. From time to time there may be a requirement to work on Saturdays between 7am and 7pm.

Background

The Cove Sports and Community Club is currently home to four sporting clubs comprising of football (Australian Rules), cricket and two netball clubs with more than 1000 members sharing the facility.

BMX and soccer have now transferred to their new facilities on Majors Road, O’Halloran Hill at the Sam Willoughby International BMX Facility, and the Southern Soccer Facility.

The Cove Sports Netball and Lower Oval project, will deliver a new netball facility and reconfiguration of the BMX/Soccer areas of the site, to create a multi-sport field complete with additional car parking.

Council have been awarded $2.5 million in state funding towards the project costs.

Construction works, consisting of initial site preparation commenced August 2023, and works are anticipated to be complete in mid-2024.

The new facility

The upgrade at the Cove Sports and Community Centre will give netballers a new clubhouse with a canteen, meeting and storage areas, toilets, changerooms and undercover areas.

An additional two netball courts with game-quality lighting will also be built along with sheltered spectator seating, and an extra 99 car parks.

At the lower oval area of the centre, the existing BMX track and soccer field will be removed and replaced with a reconfigured sporting field suitable for a range of different recreational activities.

The upgrades will include:

  • Netball club building with undercover areas
  • 2 additional netball courts with lighting and sheltered spectator seating
  • Resurfacing of existing courts with sheltered spectator seating
  • Car parking adjacent accommodating 99 car spaces

The netball club building will accommodate:

  • Canteen with external access
  • Meeting room
  • Storage area
  • Two change rooms with changing cubicles
  • Male/female and accessible toilet facilities

Multipurpose field and car parking - SEE THE PLANS HERE

The demolition of the existing Cove BMX track and reconfiguration of the soccer field enables the construction of a new multi-sport field and adjacent car parking.

Multi-sport field accommodates:

  • Cricket
  • Soccer
  • Rugby
  • Football

New car parking adjacent the residential area is set back 24m from the boundary and accommodates a new walking track and additional 89 car spaces.
