Marion Basketball Stadium

For years, the South Adelaide Basketball Club has been lobbying for a new facility to meet the needs of its membership (over 2200 players). The existing Marion Basketball Stadium is well over 50 years old and must be replaced.

In April 2022, the Marion Council received Federal Government funding of $6 million to upgrade the Marion Basketball Stadium.

At its General Council meeting held on 27 February 2024, Marion Council considered that the best solution to replace the ageing basketball facility at Norfolk Road is to replace it with a five court basketball stadium. The overarching principle is maximising public spaces for the good of the community.

Council staff will now have designs drawn up so that they can be released for public consultation in late 2024.

If we proceed with plans for a desperately needed five-court basketball stadium, the new stadium would be inconsistent with the Marion Tennis Club remaining on that site. Marion Council has communicated with the Marion Tennis Club and Tennis SA. Following an initial meeting on March 13, subsequent meetings have been organised to discuss possible solutions for the members and social players. We understand the shock and disappointment when the club was first consulted about the proposal.

Next steps

When the consultation phase commences, the Council will ensure that residents, stakeholders, and the wider community are made aware of the consultation process and given ample opportunity to respond. Council will consider all responses before making a final decision.
