Background
Encouraging household rainwater harvesting and use, forms a key part of both the City of Marion and City of Holdfast Bay councils’ overall strategy for reducing stormwater flows to sea and, installing a rainwater tank is an environmentally friendly way to make the most of a freely available resource.
With the assistance of funding from the Department for Environment and Water, both councils are undertaking a joint pilot project to investigate a Rainwater Tank Incentive Scheme within our council areas. We are seeking to understand the level of interest from the community living within the pilot area in installing a new rainwater tank or upgrading an existing rainwater tank for household use.
Council cost contribution
Council have allocated a budget for this project. Be quick to register your interest in installing a new tank or plumbing your existing tank in for household use and contributions towards the cost will be approved on a ‘first-come-first-served’ basis until funds are exhausted.
Benefits of rainwater tank use
There are a number of advantages that can be realised through the increased use of residential rainwater tanks, especially through the use of rainwater within the home including:
Reducing the volume of stormwater which can contains pollutants from entering the drainage system and eventually the St Vincent Gulf during periods of wet weather
Improving the health of the Gulf’s marine ecosystem
Improving the amenity of the area’s iconic beaches that are a major tourist attraction for Adelaide
Provides you with access to a resource that can be used at any time around your house and garden
Saving up to 40% of your drinking water supply, which could mean $200 a reduction from your water bill
