What does 'Toward 2040.. Together' mean and what is a Strategic Plan?

'Toward 2040.. Together' is a tagline that represents the community being involved in shaping a plan for the future.

The Plan City of Marion Strategic Plan 2024-2034 is a key foundation Plan that guides the direction of activities undertaken by Council.

Why do we need a Strategic Plan?

This feedback will help Council to review and develop a new vision for the council area, understand key challenges, aspirations and develop clear strategies that help to align council resources and budgets.

Who is Council seeking feedback from?

Council is seeking feedback from residents, visitors, and other stakeholders that have a connection to the City of Marion and want to be involved in its future.

    What is community engagement?

Community engagement, also known as ‘public participation’, is about involving people in decision-making. Community engagement helps Council to achieve more effective governance through balancing decision -making with sensitivity to community needs, interests and aspirations.

Well -planned community engagement activities and processes enhance a vibrant local democracy and support the development of ongoing relationships with the people who visit, live and work in the City of Marion.

How does Council prioritise all the feedback to develop a Strategic Plan?

As part of Section 122 of the LGA Act council must give consideration to regional, state, and national objectives and strategies that are relevant to the economic, social, physical, and environmental development and management of its area.

Council is also mandated to consider the sustainability of the council’s financial performance and position, the service levels required by council to achieve its objectives, the extent to which infrastructure will need to be maintained replaced, or developed by the council.

Council must also consider the demographic characteristics of its community to the extent that is reasonable taking into account the availability of appropriate and accurate data. Council’s Asset Management Plans and Long -Term Financial Plan must be considered in the development of its strategic plans.

Community feedback gives the council new up-to-date accurate feedback. This feedback is key data that is helpful to understand the sentiment of our residents, businesses, and visitors and to inform the council of any perceived gaps in services or whether there are other areas that the council must now focus.

    What happens next?

Council values all feedback received to create a Vision for the next 10 years.

Your feedback is important to us, and it will be reviewed and used to help inform the Strategic Plan 2024-2040. To close the loop, Council will publish a draft Strategic Plan for further comment after endorsement by General Council by mid -2024.
