Why has this site been selected for an upgrade and a new public toilet?

The City of Marion Open Space Plan 2018-2028 identified Fryer Street Reserve as a local level reserve that would benefit from open space improvements including seating and landscaping.

The Plan also identified the need for a public toilet along the coastal walkway, as there are currently only two toilets along the trail – one at the Marino Rocks car park and the other at the Boat Shed Café at Hallett Cove. Fryer Street Reserve is approximately halfway between these two locations, it is 25 mins walk from the Boat Shed Café and 42 mins walk to the Marino Rocks car park.

The following factors were considered in locating a toilet at this site:

    • It would be located close to the coastal walking trail
    • It is easily visible from the trail
    • It has the potential to be a node on the Coastal Walkway with a picnic table, shelter and toilet where people can stop to rest
    • It is located close to the potential future beach access point (Coastal Walkway Planning)
    • Due to the significant slope of the site, the toilet can be positioned low within the reserve to have minimal impact on residential views

What times will the toilet be open?

The toilet will be open from 7am - 7pm daily and will be pre-programmed to lock and unlock around these times.

How will the toilet be cleaned and maintained?

The toilet has an automated floor and seat clean after a pre-determined number of uses. Further cleaning and maintenance will be carried out 3 times a week or as required.

    Will the toilet be safe?

The toilet has a restricted use time. If an occupant is in the toilet for more than 10 minutes a warning will sound and the unit will open. The proposed toilet locations ensures passive surveillance from passing foot traffic.

When will the upgrades be taking place?

The upgrade will occur next financial year 2022/23 (subject to community feedback). This financial year 2021/22 we are undertaking planning which includes presenting the community with the concept plan and seeking feedback.

    Who will be consulted?

A postcard with project information and a website link to the survey was sent to all local residents within 400m2 of the reserve.
