Consultation has concluded

Background

The Local Government (LG) challenge is a sophisticated development program that provides real life problem solving experiences and produces outcomes that translate into relevant, tangible and enduring benefits for participants. As part of the 2019 challenge, the 'COMrades' team will create a project in order to raise a new revenue opportunity for Council.

It is important to note that your feedback in this survey will assist with professional development and the project is currently not under consideration by Council. Community consultation is a key part of decision making in Local Government and your feedback will be valuable to assist participants in this challenge.

LG challenge task- Project Idea

Problem: Hard rubbish waste is a significant cost to Council and the community. Combined with the rise in illegal hard rubbish dumping, waste costs in general are having a major impact on councils and ratepayers. Currently, 600 tonnes of hard waste items are collected annually from residents and it all ends up in landfill.

Potential Solution: Hard Rubbish Recycling Program - What we propose

- residents to participate in the 'Show you care, hard rubbish share' initiative by uploading their hard waste on a digital platform with an option for other residents to view the hard waste items and potentially pick up, therefore reducing the amount of waste going to landfill

- potential consideration of a store/shop front to sell pre loved hard rubbish waste operated by council

- Council to on sell materials that are collected e.g. furniture, metal, wood, reduce amount of hard rubbish going to landfill (we estimate approximately 300 tonnes per year could be on sold with revenue and dumping savings used for other community initiatives)

- In addition to the current free pick ups available to residents, a user pay system is also introduced for residents that may want extra pick ups in the year.
