Background

The garden beds located at Kellett Reserve, Denham Avenue were maintained by a small group of residents known as the Morphettville Community Garden group. The group is no longer active and their licence agreement with Council to care for and maintain the garden beds expires on 30 June 2026 and will not be renewed. Council is seeking community feedback on potential options for the ongoing use and management of the existing council-owned wicking beds for community benefit.

The consultation will explore:

  • Future management options for the wicking beds
  • Opportunities for continued community use of the site
  • Community interest in alternative garden models or uses
  • Ideas to support local participation and activation of the space

Consultation closes 5 pm on Monday 1 June 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

A community garden is a community space where residents can grow fresh produce including vegetables, fruit, flowers and herbs. It is also a place for building social connections and a shared sense of community and belonging while providing opportunity to learn new skills.

The garden was previously maintained by a small volunteer group that is no longer active. Their licence agreement expires on 30 June 2026 and will not be renewed, so Council is exploring new ways to manage the site.

Council is considering two options:

  • Keeping the garden beds in place for informal community use (without a formal group), or
  • Relocating the beds to another established community garden where they can be actively maintained.

Visit the Survey tab to have your say.

Consultation will include local residents, current garden stakeholders, Elected Members and relevant community organisations.

If there is limited local interest or capacity to use and maintain the garden beds, Council may relocate them to another community garden after 30 June 2026 to ensure they continue to be used and cared for.
