Review our draft Community Engagement Policy

Engagement is how we involve the community in decisions that affect them. Is there a better way? How would you like to have your say?

Background

Why we have to update our Community Engagement Policy

The release of the Local Government Community Engagement Charter (the Charter) means that we are now required to update our Community Engagement Policy by 11 September 2026 to ensure that the requirements of the Charter are met. The Community Engagement Charter introduces clearer engagement categories, stronger accessibility considerations and improved requirements on reporting how feedback has been used to the community.

We have drafted an update to our existing Public Consultation Policy, to meet the requirements of the new Charter, and Section 50A(6) of the Local Government Act 1999 requires that we consult on this with the community.

As well as consulting on our new policy, we also want to find out ways in which we can improve how we engage with you.

We aim to reach all parts of the community to share clear, balanced information and to provide genuine opportunities for people to have their say, and we want to hear from you.

Is there is a better way? How would you like to have your say and get involved?

There are many ways you can provide your feedback, click on the "Have your say tab" to find out how. There is also a Word Document version below.

Your feedback can influence:

  • how the council engages and communicates with the public
  • how community feedback is provided and shared
  • ways the council can make engagement more inclusive and accessible

Your feedback can’t influence:

Legislative requirements, or the council’s obligations under the new Community Engagement Charter.
