Who decided on this upgrade?

Council endorsed a playground upgrade for Cormorant Drive Reserve through the City of Marion Playground Framework in December 2017.

    What happens to my feedback?

We will take your responses from this consultation, comments will be collated into a report that will help shape the final design of this reserve.

Whilst we are unable to consider everything we hear, your feedback will help us understand community priorities so it is important you take this opportunity to tell us what you think.

When will this reserve be upgraded?

Consultation comments will be considered and a final design will be completed by mid 2022.

Once the final design has been developed it will be added to the website. Construction is anticipated to start in 2022 / 2023 financial year.

Why is the sand pit/seesaw equipment located away from the other playground elements?

The location of the new playground equipment has been placed in the footprint of the old playground to reduce the amount of earthworks required and minimise disturbance to existing tree roots.

The sand pit/seesaw equipment and picnic table have been located in a flat shady area which:

    • requires minimal earthworks as the area is already flat

    • allows for parental supervision over the play space and nearby creek (the surrounding trees have a high canopy and there is no understory planting to allow clear lines of sight).

    • provides natural shade throughout the day

A decision will be made on the inclusion of the Diprotodon fossil sand pit OR seesaw following consultation feedback.

How was the location for the footpath chosen?

The footpath location has been selected for its minimal disturbance to existing tree roots and follows the most accessible and flatter areas (least sloping) of the existing ground

Will any existing trees be removed?

The concept has been designed around existing trees to ensure no existing trees are removed. Council’s arborist will be consulted throughout the construction process to minimise disturbance to existing trees.

What is the Megafauna search and find game?

An interactive game will be developed which has ‘search and find’ elements hidden around the play area. It will have fun graphics and educational information about different Megafauna species found in South Australia.

Why is the drink fountain located away from the playground?

The drink fountain is located where there is an existing tap. This significantly reduces costs of trenching and reduces disturbance to existing trees.

Why has the existing playground fence been removed?

The fence has reached the end of its asset life and requires removal. Cormorant Drive Reserve is a local level playground with minimal budget. We have prioritised allocation of the budget to play elements as opposed to fencing, which has a high cost

Cormorant Drive Reserve is situated in a beautiful natural location which we want to respect and enhance with play elements which are sensitive to, and harmonious with, the natural surrounds. The proposed playground is designed to encourage children to explore and interact with the natural environment, without barriers. Nature play significantly improves all aspects of child development – physical, cognitive, social and emotional. Playing outdoors grows resilience, self-confidence, initiative, creativity and more.

The City of Marion offers a range of playground options with the closest fenced playground located at Southbank Boulevard Reserve, Hallet Cove.

    Will a toilet be added?

No. A new toilet is not part of the scope for this project. This is a local level playground. Toilets are allocated for significantly larger playgrounds.

Playgrounds near Cormorant Drive Reserve with toilets are:

    • Heron Way Reserve, Hallett Cove

    • Southbank Boulevard reserve, Hallett Cove

    Will there be a BBQ?

No. A new BBQ is not part of the scope for this project. This is a local level playground. BBQ’s are allocated for significantly larger playgrounds.

Playgrounds near Cormorant Drive Reserve with BBQ’s are:

    • Heron Way Reserve, Hallett Cove

    • Southbank Boulevard reserve, Hallett Cove

Will this reserve get shade sails?

No. This is a local level playground and shade sails are endorsed for larger playgrounds only. There are existing trees onsite for natural shade.

The concept proposes one additional tree to add more shade to the playground, in particular the slide. The species will be selected in consultation with Council’s Biodiversity Coordinator to ensure it is appropriate for the site.
