April 2024 - Project update
At their meeting on 12 March 2024, council provided in principle support for the proposed Cove Community Garden, to be managed by the Cove Community Garden Inc. on Perry Barr Farm, Hallett cove. Council also endorsed to allocate an additional $40,000 to the existing Community Garden Budget for the 2024-25 financial year, to cover the cost of secure fencing to support the establishment of the Cove Community Garden.
Cove Community Garden Inc. is now in the process of applying for relevant development approvals and forming a written agreement with council for the use of the land and is sourcing funding prior to commencing operation.
The community feedback we received on the proposal has been summarised into a report for your review.
Preliminary works are expected to be underway in the coming weeks.
Background
In February 2023 the community were asked to provide feedback on a proposal for a new community garden on council land at Perry Bar Farm, Hallett Cove, we received extensive feedback and based on this feedback, the Cove Community Garden Inc Group have made changes to the proposed garden design, and we are now inviting the community to participate in this next stage of consultation on the Amended Concept Plan.
Community Gardens
A community garden is a community space where residents come together to grow fresh produce including vegetables, fruit, flowers, and herbs. It is also a place for building social connections and a sense of community.
The Cove Community Garden Incorporated is a non-profit community organisation comprised of local residents who have come together to plan and establish an inclusive community garden in Hallett Cove. If this proposal was supported this group would be responsible for the ongoing care and management of the community garden.
Next Steps
The Cove Garden community feedback report will be presented to council on Tuesday 12, March 2024 at a General Council meeting. The outcome and next steps will be shared with the community following this date.
