We’re reviewing how mobile food vendors operate across our city, explore proposed changes and tell us what you think.

Overview

Council have recently completed a review of the operation of mobile food truck vendors across the City of Marion Council area. Current trading locations were reviewed, and some changes have been proposed. Several opportunities for additional trading locations have been identified.

Please review the 'Food truck location map' for an overview of existing trading locations, proposed new locations and removal or modification of existing sites.

The review has also proposed changes to permit conditions, including limiting trading hours to between 8 am and 9 pm, and removing the ability for mobile food delivery apps to be used.

The proposed changes to trading conditions are as follows

  • Hours of operation

Trading between 8 am and 9 pm.

Vendors must cease trading by 9 pm and vacate the site by 9:15 pm.

  • App delivery services

A mobile food vending business is not permitted to sell on app delivery services (including, but not limited to UberEats, MenuLog, and DoorDash) whilst trading from Council’s pre-approved locations.

  • Number of vans per site

Maximum of 2 vans per site, on a first come first served basis.

Some locations may be suitable for more than 2 vans, and these will be clearly identified.

If required, staff may implement a booking system at popular sites on a case-by-case basis.

  • Proximity to surrounding businesses

Pre-approved locations should not be within 250 metres of fixed food and or beverage businesses.

  • Proximity to residential properties

Potential locations must not be on the same side of a road that is directly in front of residential premises. Potential locations should not cause undue disruption to residents.

  • Parking and changed traffic conditions

Potential locations should be on roads which provide adequate parking, width, and maintain safe pedestrian access.

Proposed mobile food truck locations within the City of Marion

Existing locations and proposed removals

Existing mobile food vendor trading locations

Existing sites that would remain unchanged under these proposals are;

  • Capella Drive Reserve, Hallett Cove
  • Glade Crescent Reserve, Hallett Cove
  • Harbrow Grove Reserve, Seacombe Gardens
  • Hessing Crescent Reserve, Trott Park
  • Reserve Street Reserve, Trott Park
  • Southbank Boulevard Reserve, Sheidow Park
  • Jervois Street Reserve, South Plympton (Waterhouse Road side of reserve)

Proposed removal of locations

Existing sites that would be removed under these proposals are;

  • Jervois Street Reserve, South Plympton (Jervois Street side of reserve)
  • Glandore Community Centre, Naldera Street, Glandore
  • Glandore Oval, Margaret Street, Glandore (temporary removal and proposed new purpose-built site)
  • Jervois Street Reserve, Jervois Street

At Jervois Street Reserve, South Plympton, there are currently two locations, one on the northern side, along Waterhouse Road and one on the southern side along Jervois Street.

It is proposed to remove the southern location on Jervois Street and for the location on Waterhouse Road to remain due to road widths.

  • Glandore Community Centre, Naldera Steet

Under these proposed changes, the site at Glandore Community Centre, located on Naldera Street, Glandore would also be removed due to the narrow width of Naldera Street which makes the trading of mobile food vendors unsafe and an existing lease agreement in place with a community cafe located at the Glandore Community Cente.

  • Glandore Oval, Margaret Street

It is proposed to temporarily remove the existing food truck location on Margaret Street, Glandore due to planned future oval upgrades and if required, due to South Road upgrades.

A new purpose built location with power is being considered for an area behind the football goals on the Margaret Street end of the oval which would be subject to statutory approvals being obtained.
