Underground stormwater retention and detention tanks

September 2026 - project update

Activity on site is currently focussing on underground works including stormwater and electricity infrastructure, ahead of works on the footings and concrete slab. A breakdown of construction activities over the next 5 months is provided below:

June 2026 project update

After more than six decades of buzzer-beaters, grand finals, packed sidelines and countless hours of training, the wrecking crews took over at one of Adelaide's most iconic basketball venues earlier this month. For more than 60 years, The Shed was the home of basketball in Adelaide's south. Now, the ageing facility is being knocked over to make way for a new chapter.

A new location for the Marion Tennis Club has been identified in the southern section of the site in place of the old Croquet Club.

It is expected that the project will have a budget of $25 million-plus to deliver.

Council have reconsidered their position on the project due to both site and budget constraints.

There will be gated access to the car park which will be closed after the facility closes each day. The timing will be determined as part of the planning approval process.

There are no proposed changes for pedestrian access to the Oval and Club Marion access once the Stadium redevelopment is completed. During construction of the new facility access to the Oval and Club Marion will be via Sturt Road.

Parking has been designed to accommodate the proposed spectator and player numbers, approximately 200 spaces. This is an increase of parking spaces to accommodate the increase in visitors as required by the planning system.

The directional car park lighting is situated to the south to minimise light spill for neighbouring residents. There is minimal lighting to the external parts of the building and the building entry is also located to the south and faces the oval.

The site will have 2 dual access points to maintain the flow of cars entering and leaving the site. The overall increase in parking has been designed to accommodate larger events which will be held about 10 times a year.

A raised pedestrian crossing is proposed as part of the streetscape upgrade project to be undertaken after the stadium is constructed. It is proposed to be located between the RSL side of Norfolk Road and the new Basketball stadium.

There will be an increase in landscaping generally across the site and trees are proposed to screen the building from the adjacent retirement village. The trees will also provide shade to the car park area. There will be landscaping proposed as part of the streetscape upgrade project along Norfolk Road. The existing large trees near the existing tennis club are proposed to remain. There will also be some landscaping garden beds.

There will be landscaping swales to slow and clean water and stormwater tanks to hold and slowly release water so that the overall level of stormwater runoff isn’t more than the current flow and this water will then enter the general system.

The building has been designed to include acoustic treatments to minimise the transmission of noise from the new stadium building. The single entry is located away from residents facing south towards the oval and car parking is adjacent to minimise noise spill from users and vehicles.

Background

For years, the South Adelaide Basketball Club has been lobbying for a new facility to meet the needs of its membership (over 2200 players). The existing Marion Basketball Stadium is well over 50 years old and must be replaced.

In April 2022, the Marion Council received Federal Government funding of $6 million to upgrade the Marion Basketball Stadium. The project has also received a $250,000 contribution from the South Adelaide Basketball Club.

At its General Council meeting held on 27 February 2024, Marion Council considered that the best solution to replace the ageing basketball facility at Norfolk Road was to replace it with a five-court basketball stadium. The overarching principle being to maximise public spaces for the good of the community.

Subsequently at their 25 March 2025 General Council meeting, Council Members decided to amend the design from a five-court stadium to a four-court stadium.

Council staff have now developed a site plan for the new stadium and associated car parking at Norfolk Road.
