Background

The City of Marion completed community engagement on a proposed new standalone public toilet within Warradale Park Reserve.

This project was identified as a key priority in our Open Space Plan 2024-2034.

The planning process involved a site audit to determine the most suitable location, which considered access, service location, existing trees and crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) principles.

The two potential locations included:

Location - Along footpath between play space and tennis courts

Design considerations:

1. More central location with easy access from tennis courts and playground.

2. More cost effective as services are closer than Option B (ie. water, sewer, electricity).

3. All abilities access pathway already exists.

4. Minor vegetation removal required for toilet.

5. Opportunity for additional planting around toilet in existing garden bed.

6. Opportunity for mural on toilet.

Location - Along the oval loop path

Design considerations:

1. Central location in reserve, with easy access to playground and cricket nets.

2. Higher cost for installation of services than Option A (ie. water, sewer, electricity).

3. Clear sight lines to front of toilet exist from the oval and Struan Ave.

4. No vegetation removal required for toilet.

5. Opportunity for new un-irrigated garden bed next to toilet.

6. Opportunity for mural on toilet.

Community engagement findings

The community engagement process involved:

  • Community postcard (distributed within a 400m radius of the reserve)
  • FAQS
  • Online survey
  • Location Plan

Consultation Findings

The majority:

  • 79.7% of survey respondents believe there is a need for a public toilet
  • 67% support Option A – Along the footpath between playspace and tennis courts

Next steps

Based on the consultation findings, we will be proceeding with a public toilet at the Option A location – along the footpath between playspace and tennis courts. Construction is expected to commence in the 2025-2026 financial year.
