March 2024 update

Works will soon be commencing on the plaza upgrade. The safety of our community and contractors is vitally important, so during this time Warracowie Way will be closed to vehicle access to ensure construction areas can be managed safely. You can review the traffic management plan here

Access to services (April – August 2024)

• Marion Cultural Centre - access via the southern car park with vehicle access off Diagonal Road. Pedestrian access will be via the southern car park entry.
• State Aquatic and Leisure Centre - will retain access via Morphett Road
• Milham Street multi deck car park - will retain access via Morphett Road
• Properties on Milham Street - will retain access via Morphett Road
• Services SA (Centrelink and Medicare) - will retain access via Milham Street and Morphett Road entry
• Health care services (GP Plus and the Domain) - will be accessible via Morphett Road and Milham Street
• Westfield and Bunnings - will be accessible via the signalised intersections on Diagonal Road and Morphett Road

Marion Cultural Centre Vision

The Marion Cultural Centre (MCC) Plaza provides an opportunity to create an active public realm that enhances the Regional Centre as a destination, supporting community activities, social engagement, and the visitor economy.

Objectives

Enhanced amenity

Integrate green space comprising of trees, lawn and passive recreation spaces supporting environmental benefits, comfort and extended public dwell time.

Community connections

Strengthen connections to broader precinct for pedestrian and cyclists whilst managing vehicle movements and access requirements. Key considerations are to enhance connections between public transportation and community facilities within the precinct.

Flexibility of functional use

Create a vibrant space that can adapt for various functional needs. A space that offers respite and relaxation, circulation and access to surrounding facilities, whilst accommodates opportunities for varied scaled events.

Sense of place

Creation of spaces that explore Council’s community vision of liveable, valuing nature, engaged, connected, innovative and prosperous.

To enhance activity, amenity, and accessibility to and within the precinct the following design principles were considered in the concept plans:

• Improve pedestrian and cyclist connectivity, amenity, and safety through the subject area for linkages between the local residential areas, the Oaklands Station, MCC, SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre (SAALC) and Westfield and other facilities on Milham Street.
• Develop a plaza that can be utilised for community events and provide improved amenity for community use between the MCC and the SAALC with due consideration of events planning requirements.
• Retain vehicle access to existing business and community facilities within Milham Street, whilst minimising speeds and traffic volumes.

Past project updates

February 2024 update

Council have recently awarded a construction contract to Outside Ideas who are a South Australian civil landscape company. Construction works will start in mid-April 2024 with expected completion in August 2024. Review the final plan for the new plaza.

June 2023 update

At its June 2023 General Council meeting, council resolved revised plans for the Marion Cultural Centre Plaza. The revised plans incorporate 2-way vehicle movements on Warracowie Way and access to Westfield, whilst maintaining the integrity of the vision and objective to enhance amenity.
